This is a sad but sweet read and a great start to a new series. My heart hurt for them both and you cannot help but want the best for them both, but I am hesitant to think they will be the strength the other needs to overcome their pasts. Especially with their pasts always as part of the futures.

I Stand Before You Judge Me Not Book 1 edition by SR Grey Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

There is character development, and then there is building a character from the soul up – nuances, habits, thoughts, feelings and meanings. S.R. Grey does this, first with Chase then later with Kay. As Chase’s life story unfolded before me, I didn't just learn about him – Grey helped me understand him. From the moments that can break a young man’s heart to decisions that can alter a life. My soul hurt as I traveled his path, finding pain when his mother sent him away and feeling the compulsions that shattered him, seeking something – anything – that would make him feel better. I talked to Chase as I would my friend, saying “No! Stop!” as if he could hear me, as if somehow my words would stop the train wreck I saw – and even Chase – saw coming.

By the time Kay graced the page, I was shell shocked and deeply invested in learning the outcome of Chase’s tragic moments. I was tempted to hurry past some pages just to get back to his story – until Kay caught my attention. Grey was just as meticulous with her introduction, leading me along by the hand and heart strings as Kay came alive before my eyes, her own life shadowed by the harsh grace of fate and grief.

When Chase and Kay finally come together, there is hesitancy and realism – it takes time to fall in love, as many of us find out in our real lives. The human aspect to these two characters is engrossing and disarming. I was smiling, laughing and at times… I had to swallow that hard lump in the back of my throat as I pictured the unavoidable moments that crafted these two individuals meant to fall to in love.

‘I stand before You’ (Judge me Not #1) is a captivating, well written stroke of genius. I often recommend various novels on , eager to share my experiences – and while this work receives my full marks and recommendations for any literary connoisseur – I had to go a step farther and call my friends, and my mother to share the title. She is constantly looking for the next great author to fall in love with and follow, with S.R. Grey, I feel confidant to say that she may have found her. I did.
Chase had everything going for him; then when things with his family falls apart - so does he. He ends up getting arrested for drug possession and goes to serve 4 years in jail. When he is freed, he returns to the scene of the crime, Harmony Creek where he is met with suspicion and distrust by the townspeople. Chase is determined to make things good and turn his life around.
Kay has experienced a tragedy herself, and is in Harmony Creek, barely surviving.

Both Chase and Kay feel sparks fly when they meet. This books jumps immediately into their attraction, but the author does a great job describing their many dates, and the friendship that develops. Many times authors have the characters jump into bed and that is enough for their feelings to grow from there.

In this case, the discussions they have, the dates they go on, the slow development of trust and the bond between them is written so sweetly and organically. You truly can see how they fall for each other and how they help each other grow. They decided to take a chance on each other.

Theirs is a sweet love that grew from a much needed friendship.

The aspects I loved about this book
- the characters are genuinely kind and good people. Of course, both are gorgeous and have strong talents. They do not lie to each other for pride's sake, nor were there any big misunderstandings that make you crazy
- the characters were still vulnerable (they should be, they are only in their early 20s!!!). The parents and figureheads in the book still are able to use guilt or love to make them question themselves, even if in their heart they know what the right answer is
- side story there is a side story with Chase's brother that is interesting. this continues to the very end where it does not have closure. There are "....." at the end of the book. Looking forward to the next book. It doesn't end in a SUPER cliffhanger. We don't know what happens with the brother, but at least the main characters have their HEA
- happy ending "not completely ending" for the character, Kay and Chase. They declare their love, their are completely forthcoming with each other and they are definitely on their way to the next level
- yeah, the one or two steamy scenes are hot
- they both have broken pasts, but they are not deep and heavy lamenting about it all the time. It's mentioned in their silent, 'in my head' monologues, but it's more about 'I need to move on' than 'oh woe is me'
- the description of Chase in prison and his encounters with drugs is good. he is not perfect. he may have a relapse. Kay will be there for him
- Chase's relationship with his brother is believable. Chase is still pretty much dealing with his own issues, that he probably wasn't ready to fly to Vegas to help out with his brother just yet. Plus Chase is still really young. That responsibility should still be his mother's, right?

Some things about the book I didn't like
- okay - they are really young, do people go ON and ON about how much they love each other at that age? It was sweet, but let's use other phrases?
- the "...." at the end. Really? I think you can still write standalone books and still have a series. That was just annoying.
- how Kay's mother attempts to try to heal things between them. Her mother was written like a cold hearted witch. To have her come around to the extent that she does, was not really believable to me. She should do WAY more groveling to Kay.
I think the author really wanted Kay and Chase's story to wrap up nicely so we can focus on his brother, Will and his situation. Things do not have to be so neat (although I really love neat endings) - I think to have THIS wrap up neatly, you need at least 6 more chapters to deal with those people that hurt Chase and Kay growing up.

Overall, I enjoyed this book.
It was sweet to read and I liked the characters, storyline and general good feelings!
Enjoy!
I Stand Before You (Judge Me Not #1) is not just another romance novel. This book will truly pull at your heart strings in more ways than one. Intelligently written, Author S.R. Grey surrounds you with real life thoughts, attitudes, heartaches and joys through which you will find yourself completely immersed in the story.

When we meet Chase we see how troubled he is but it is also evident that he is truly a caring man. His love for his grandmother and brother are testaments to his thoughtfulness and heart. As you read into his life and discover what went so terribly wrong, and the way Chase has decided to deal with this pain, you find yourself heartbroken for him and hoping that he finds his way out of this troubled life and into brighter days.

When we meet Kay we see a light at the end of this dark tunnel for Chase. We learn that she has a past that may be even darker than his and hope that somehow they will be able to help heal each other. Will they come together? Will their love heal the wounds of their past? I couldn’t wait to find out.

The love scenes rival the best romance novels out there. Deliciously descriptive lovemaking brings to life the passion felt by these young people in love.

I really liked learning where the title of the book came from. It is one of those happenstance moments that come to mean so much more. I highly recommend this book. The author leaves you eager for more. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.
This is a sad but sweet read and a great start to a new series. My heart hurt for them both and you cannot help but want the best for them both, but I am hesitant to think they will be the strength the other needs to overcome their pasts. Especially with their pasts always as part of the futures.
