This is a fast paced story packed full of love, loss, gain, drama, humor and intrigue. Really enjoyed getting to know the characters and watching them evolve and amazingly become the perfect "happily ever after".
I really enjoyed the earlier books in this series and eagerly awaited to see what would happen with Lachland and Roanaid. The book started out with promise with Lachlan hopping mad and out for revenge. I was hoping for a story with a lot of tension and banter between Lachlan and the heroine, but this story quickly fades into a rather dull plot line of man and woman want each other, but it's not a good idea for them to act on their overwhelming attraction because they are from distinctly different classes. Also, the mistaken identity and revelation of an identical twin that explains the heroine's true identity is just too much like a soap opera and very unsatisfying. But I think my biggest complaint was that Lachlan had supposedly been cursed that any woman he slept with would be impregnated and the babe and woman would die during childbirth. It's fine that Lachlan believes that the curse is real, but it's totally unrealistic to think that a man who was the highlander cassanova with the ladies would suddenly become chaste as a monk. I mean, come on, we're supposed to believe that a seasoned warrior has so little control that he can't "fool around" and gain satisfaction without actually having sex. Overall, I just found this was a story with too much anxiety and self pity over things that would never have been obstacles in real life. I was disappointed that this is how the series ended when Lachlan's character had been set up to have a really intense story.
Reading the earlier books in the series isn't necessary, but will definitely help you with background on the characters. While I obviously didn't like this book, I do recommend the earlier books in this series and I will say that this author is a great writer. She just fell through on the plot on this one in my opinion.
Lachlan is determined to find Raonaid, the woman who cursed him, and do anything in his power to get her to remove the curse. When he finally tracks her down, not only does she claim to be someone else named Catherine, but she also claims to be suffering from amnesia. The chemistry between Lachlan and Catherine is great and their relationship is interesting to see unfold, especially in light of his strong dislike for Raonaid. I really enjoyed the mystery surrounding Catherine and her lost years. Lachlan's growth as a character was great. Wonderful story!
This is my favorite novel out of the trilogy. The characters and their dynamic is so unique that it really stands a part form the other two book in the series. The male and female leads are two of my favorite characters and I love how strong they are in very different ways. While the other two books in the series deal more with the politics, this one takes on an almost supernatural feel which just enhances the magic of the time period.
Julianne MacLean's latest Scottish tale has its high and low moments. It has the requisite highlander who is bold and brash and an independent woman who falls for him. There is a paranormal element to the story and I believe that some of the secondary characters were in a previous novel.
Lachlan MacDonald is a cursed man. Firstly he lost his beloved wife and infant during childbirth when he was a very young man then ten years later, a vindictive woman places a curse upon the handsome rogue if he lies with a woman she will surely become pregnant and die in child birth. For several years, Lachlan has remained celibate and has searched for the woman, Raonaid who placed the curse. He finds her at the Drumloch estate and almost ravishes her. He is angry and so lusty that he cannot stop from desiring the beautiful woman, even when she claims not to be Raonaid.
Heiress Catherine is caught unaware by Lachland's incredible wrath. She is a woman who has her own troubles. She suffers from amnesia. She was discovered by her grandmother in Italy after being away for five years. She has no recollection of her identity at all but feels something is not right at the estate.
Lachlan seems to hold the answers to her past and even though Catherine cannot comprehend what Lachland tells her of her past; she was venal. She accompanies Lachlan back to the Highlands hoping to jar her memory.
Almost from the first Lachlan is bemused by Catherine. He knows her for an amoral woman yet she seems so different. His attraction almost overwhelms him but he has given her his word he will not touch her on their journey and this proves to be a near impossible task.
The leads have a volatile relationship especially when they travel to the Scottish highlands. They are prickly and Catherine is almost judgmental and irrationally angry. Lachlan spends much time trying to decipher this new Raonaid, he is uncertain if she is telling the truth about amnesia or just manipulating him.
There are several characters in this story that play a part in the leads romance. The author gives some background to their past but it would probably be better to read the previous novel in this series. I was a bit lost at times with the older characters
This couple has more than just Catherine/Raonaid's memory loss to overcome, there are cold hearted relatives, curses and political Jacobite intrigue. This couple does not establish a strong connection until the middle of the story, up to then they are too distrustful with each other to form any kind of strong bond. The middle of this novel shifts the story and the two work as a team instead of against each other to discover Catherine's past. I am giving this novel 3.5 stars. While the story is intriguing I never really connected to the characters and their struggles until the middle of the novel.
I thoroughly enjoyed all the characters in this series and I particularly liked how all the characters were carried over into the next book (playing small roles, but nonetheless included). It helped to solidify the stories and better define all the personalities.
This book really had a few twists and turns I had not expected, but enjoyed immensely. I think a reader of historical romance novels would find this book enjoyable as well as the entire series.
Lachland, Catherine, and yes Raionaid really make this story. The lust, love and romance is tender and sweet, but also sad and frustrating. Poor Lachland is put through the ringer by Raionaid's curse and is at the point of breaking when he meets Catherine. That's when the story really begins...and the sparks start flying!
Hope you enjoy this book....happy reading! Cheers! 🍺🍺🍺
